How to download a bank statement in XML (camt.053) format
Where to find the ISO 20022 XML statement in the SEB, Swedbank, Luminor, Artea, Revolut Business, Paysera and Citadele internet banks, how camt.053 differs from camt.054 and MT940, and what to check before importing.
It is the ISO 20022 XML account statement for a past period. Most accounting and reconciliation software reads it.
Look for "Account statement"
In most banks you pick the format when downloading the statement: look for "ISO 20022", "XML" or "camt.053" in the list.
Usually in the business internet bank
Bank instructions describe the XML statement for business customers. Private banking may not offer this format.
One file per account
Some banks create a separate file for each account or currency. Check that you have downloaded all of the client's accounts.
Formats
camt.053, camt.054, MT940:which is for what
Banks offer several statement formats. For accounting and reconciliation, structured XML files work, not PDF or CSV.

Format
What it is
When to choose it
camt.053
ISO 20022 XML account statement for a day or a longer past period.
Choose first: for month-end, importing into accounting, reconciliation.
camt.054
ISO 20022 XML notifications of individual debit and credit entries.
When the bank only provides entries in this format, or you need a notice per transaction.
camt.052
ISO 20022 XML intraday report.
For following the current day. Not for month-end, as the day is not finished.
MT940
Older SWIFT text statement format.
Only if your software does not accept XML.
LITAS-ESIS
The old Lithuanian banks' text format, replaced by ISO 20022 XML.
Avoid for new systems, even though some providers still offer it.
CSV / Excel
A table with no common standard: each bank's columns differ.
For viewing and manual work, not automated import.
PDF
A statement for people to read.
For the archive and audit. Software cannot read it reliably.

Where to find the XML statementin your bank
Steps are taken from the banks' official pages. "Partly documented" means the bank confirms the XML format but does not publish the exact menu path, so check it in your internet bank.
SEB
Documented by the bank

1Log in to the business internet bank.
2In the menu bar click "Sąskaitos" (Accounts), then "Sąskaitos išrašas" (Account statement).
3Open the "Failo užsakymas" (Statement export) tab and choose the period, account and ISO XML format.
4Click "Parengti" (Export) and download the prepared file.

We found no XML statement instructions for the private internet bank.
Your bank is not listed? Look for an "Account statement" menu and for "ISO 20022", "XML" or "camt.053" in the format list. If you cannot find it, ask the bank whether the XML statement is available in the business internet bank or only through a separate integration service.
Common mistakes
What usuallygoes wrong when importing
Overlapping periods
Download statements for days 1–15 and 10–30 and some transactions end up in both files. If the software does not detect them, the books get duplicates.
The current day is missing
camt.053 often leaves out today's transactions. Download the month's statement on the day after month-end.
Not every account or currency
When each account or currency gets its own file, it is easy to miss one. Compare the number of files with the client's list of accounts.
Old periods
Some banks limit how far back you can download a statement, or charge for older periods. Check the bank's price list.
Frequently asked
Questions aboutXML statements
What is the difference between camt.053 and camt.054?
camt.053 is an account statement for the whole period, with balances. camt.054 is notifications of individual transactions. For accounting and reconciliation, camt.053 is the usual choice.
Are ISO 20022 XML and camt.053 the same thing?
Not quite. ISO 20022 is a standard with many message types, and camt.053 is the one for account statements. Open the file in a text editor and look for "camt.053" in the first lines.
Can I get an XML statement for a private account?
Bank instructions mostly describe the XML statement for business customers. If you cannot find the format in private banking, ask the bank.
Is MT940 still used?
In places, yes: Revolut Business offers it, for example. In November 2025 Swift ended the coexistence period for payment instructions, so for new systems ISO 20022 XML is the safer choice.
How far back can I download a statement?
It depends on the bank. Swedbank business statements are available from 2000, Citadele for the whole period you have been a customer, Revolut from the account opening date.
How do I check the file is right?
Check that the file contains "camt.053", that the IBAN and period match, and that the opening balance equals the closing balance of the previous statement.

See which payments are missing invoices
Upload a camt.053 or camt.054 file to Parseo and the transactions are linked to the client's invoices.
Transactions from overlapping statements are not duplicated, and missing days or balances that don't add up are flagged.
Export the list of payments without documents to CSV and send it to the client. The feature is in beta.
Steps were gathered from the banks' public instructions in October 2026. Banks change menus and labels, so if something does not match, follow your bank's own instructions. Parseo is not affiliated with the banks mentioned.
